New Hope Leeward is fortunate to have an amazing team of passionate communicators.  In some churches there is one primary communicator, and that is a great thing to have.  At New Hope Leeward we have chosen to hear God through a team of teachers.  We want to hear from teachers with a wide range of life experience and perspective.  Our hope is that our church would be stronger as we rely not on the skills and wisdom of one person, but a team of people, all teaching us the ways of God

Mike Lwin

Senior Pastor

Where were you born and raised? Born in Olympia, Washington.  Spent most of our younger years in the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii.

When did you begin attending NHL? From the day the vision of a new church called New Hope Leeward was planted in my heart by the Lord!  =)

What are your spiritual gifts? Starbucks and sleeping are my two unofficial spiritual gifts.  The official ones are Leadership, Teaching and Administration.

Anything about your family? Married to Lynnette, 3 Kids (Genesis, Jeremiah & Hoku'ala)

In a nutshell, when/how did you get saved? My senior year in college I went with some friends to a campus ministry searching for cute girls.  I didn't find a date but I did find Jesus!

After you became a Christian, what was the very first ministry you served in?

The college campus ministry I accepted Christ at was sending teams to Mexico to work with orphaned kids.  My best friend and I didn't have anything to do for Spring break so we signed up.  It was those 10 days in the pits of Mexico that catapulted my spiritual walk with Jesus and completely changed me!

Anything specific you’d like mentioned? I love, Jesus!

What do you enjoy about teaching? Sharing the great news of Jesus Christ in simple, contemporary and life applicable ways gets me stoked because it's awesome to watch people grow in their faith!

Art Larson

Theatre Campus Pastor

Where were you born and raised? My mom and Dad met and were married in Honolulu, but because my Father was in the Marine Corp, we were stationed in California when I was born.  Relocated back to Hawaii in my 2nd grade year (1969) and have been here since.

When did you begin attending NHL? In 2001 I left my former fellowship after 13 years and began attending NHO.

What are your spiritual gifts? Evangelism, Teaching, and Prayer

Anything about your family? Married for over 18 years, 3 children, and 2 grandchildren

In a nutshell, when/how did you get saved? 1988 in a parking lot on Maunakea Street in Downtown Honolulu.

After you became a Christian, what was the very first ministry you served in?
Ushers, greeters and outreach!

What do you enjoy about teaching? The privilege of sharing and expounding from the “wisdom of ages” (the Bible) is so gratifying and rewarding.  No other literature in human history can impact eternal destinies like the Bible so teaching from it brings immeasurable satisfaction.

Alec Shimizu

Leeward Ministry Center Associate Campus Pastor

Where were you born and raised? Kaimuki

When did you begin attending NHL? 2003 I think

What are your spiritual gifts? Top three are: Teaching, Pastor, and (believe it or not) Wisdom

Anything about your family? Married to my beautiful wife Lynne, and we have a super cute son, Noah.

In a nutshell, when/how did you get saved? In 1984 I attended a Campus Life meeting. Met Pastor Todd Nishimura there, we called him Todd "the guy with the big arms." Even way back then he was massive. I accepted the Lord but it was a two-week salvation. I spent the next 10 years doing nothing for the Lord but then in 1994, I was at a party and I shared with a friend of mine (over some beers) that I felt God was trying to get my attention and wanted me to go back to church. I visited a church near my home and since then He's had a hold of me.

After you became a Christian, what was the very first ministry you served in?
I served in the worship ministry.

What is something that not many people know about you? I'm deathly afraid of grasshoppers...the big ugly brown ones.

What do you enjoy about teaching? What I love about teaching is to see people learn about God and their eyes either light up with joy or fill with tears of thankfulness. Either way, the result is that they have a fuller understanding of our wonderful, powerful, gracious, loving God.

Mike McGuire

Community Pastor

Where were you born and raised?
Born and raised in Anchorage, Alaska.  (No, I don't miss the snow and ice)

When did you begin attending NHL? Starting attending the vision night meetings at Filipino Community Center, before the Grand Opening service.

What are your spiritual gifts? I'm still learning how God has wired me.  I love to read and study, write, and teach.

Anything about your family? The best decision I ever made was to marry Jaime.  I definitely married up!  We have three awesome, energetic boys, Hudson, Easton, and Brennen.

In a nutshell, when/how did you get saved? New Years Eve, 1994, I was celebrating in a bar called "Humpies" in Anchorage, Alaska.  The next morning, Jan 1, 1995, I attended a church service where the preacher talked about Jesus who would return to earth and everyone would give an account to Him for their life.  I heard God's Spirit in my heart telling me that it was true, so I opened my heart to Jesus, and accepted free forgiveness of my sins.

After you became a Christian, what was the very first ministry you served in?

My freshmen year at the Air Force Academy I started leading Bible studies in my cadet squadron and later on the hockey team.  I've been leading groups ever since.

What do you enjoy about teaching? I love it when people really appreciate the power and wisdom of the Bible.  My goal is to get listeners in the right frame of mind so that when we read the Scriptures it comes alive with new life and speaks to their situation.  In all Bible teaching, Jesus should always be the hero, and the Bible should be what is most memorable.
